The Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) recently held a training program on National Retrospective Disaster Loss Databases in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from June 21-22, 2023. The objective of the training was to foster a better understanding and management of local disaster risks via the development of databases archiving historical disaster impacts at the subnational level. This effort involves comprehensive documentation of past disaster events and identification of specific local disaster risk needs, which should enable more effective data collection approaches.
This program, part of the larger EM-DAT project, was led by CRED in collaboration with the National Institute of Disaster Management and Prevention (NIRAPAD) and supported by the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA) of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The Department of Meteorology at the University of Dhaka hosted the training, which was attended by 22 participants from four universities.
CRED will provide further information regarding upcoming training sessions in due course.
