Technical Advisory Group (TAG) Meetings have been implemented every two years on average as part of the evaluation of the USAID-BHA/CRED initiative related to the EM-DAT international disaster database. The objective of the TAG meetings is to discuss and share with the TAG members different aspects related to the EM-DAT initiative and development. Those meetings produce a series of recommendations for the continuous improvement of EM-DAT database and its related proposed services. In 2023, the meeting included experts from the scientific community and was renamed the Scientific and Technical Advisory Group (STAG) meeting.

March 20–21, 2023, Brussels, Belgium

The Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) recently hosted the first Scientific and Technical Advisory Group (STAG) panel discussion on disaster research in the context of the EM-DAT project, supported by the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance of the United States Agency for International Development (BHA/ USAID). The panel addressed several prominent issues in disaster research, including the need for improved classification of disaster types, automation of disaster data collection, and the importance of expanding data granularity to include a more local perspective. The discussion also focused on the challenge of filling data gaps, particularly in cases where data is missing or incomplete. Overall, the STAG panel provided valuable insights on the key areas of focus for disaster research and how they can be addressed to improve emergency response efforts.
