Margo Tonnelier had the pleasure of presenting our research, “Gender Differences in Years of Life Lost resulting from the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake in Nepal” at the 17th European Public Health Conference 2024. This year’s conference theme, “Sailing the Waves of European Public Health: Exploring a Sea of Innovation,” resonates deeply with our work, as we aim to shed light on crucial disparities and navigate pathways for improved disaster response.

Our study highlights gender disparities in mortality caused by the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, measured using Years of Life Lost (YLL). While males experienced higher YLL per death, females bore a higher YLL rate per 100,000 population. These findings underline the importance of understanding the factors contributing to earthquake-related fatalities, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like Nepal.
